1. Reading Skills Recognizing differences between facts and opinions Facts are statements that tell what really happened or what really is the case. A fact can be proved or disproved with direct evidence. It is sth known by actual experience or observing. Opinions are statements of belief, judgment or feeling. They show what someone thinks or feels about a subject. Solid opinions, of course, are based on facts. However, opinions are still sb‘s view of sth and are not facts themselves. 2. Passage Reading 2.1 Background information This passage is an excerpt from The Joy Luck Club (1989), a best-selling novel written by the Chinese American writer Amy Tan. http://www.ifanshu.com/book/read/2491/71689.asp In 1993, the novel was adapted into a feature film directed by Wayne Wang. The novel was also adapted into a play by Susan Kim. Present the main content of the passage. 2.2 Difficult sentences 1. After much thought, I came up with a brilliant plan for Rich to meet my mother and win her over. (Para 1) Meaning: After thinking a lot, I thought of a very good idea that would have Rich meet my mother and gain her support for our relationship. win over: gain one‘s support or favor We failed in winning him over to our side. The lawyer won over the jury by his moving defense. 2. … about seven months away. (Para 4) Here ―away‖ is used to talk about future events. If an event is a week away, it will happen a week later. The exams are still four weeks away. The Washington summit is over a month away. 3. My instructions are in my fingers. (Para 4) Meaning: (Unlike Auntie Suyuan who can only cook while looking at following directions,) I am so skilled that I can prepare and cook without much thinking as if my fingers did it by themselves. 4. check against: measure or value sth by comparing it with sth else 检验,衡量 We should check the factory‘s productivity against the agreed target. If you think there's a discrepancy in what someone told you, you can check it against your archives. 如果认为有人对你讲的前后有出入,你可以打开存档资料核查。 Check the items against the list, ie to see that it tallies. 照清单查点各项(看是否相符) 。 5. I tried to anticipate what criticisms she would have. (Para 5) Meaning: I tried to guess what negative opinions she would have of Rich. anticipate: guess or imagine in advance what will happen or what needs to be done; see what might happen in the future and take action to prepare for it 预见,预计(并做准备) We need someone who can anticipate and respond to changes in the fashion industry. 我们需要一个能预见时装业变化并能做出相应安排的人。 Try and anticipate what the interviewers will ask. 尽量设想面试主持者会提出什么问题。

6. He was a bit on the short side, compactly built. (Para. 6) Meaning: He was a little short and had a small, but well-shaped body. on the short/fat/thin, etc. side: slightly short/fat/thin, etc. 有点儿矮/胖/瘦等 I think the price is a bit on the high side. 我觉得价格有点儿高。 The weather is on the cold side. 天气有点儿凉。 7. I felt compelled to defend on his behalf … (Para. 9) Meaning: I felt I was forced to speak in support of him and say sth good for him … on one‘s behalf: instead of sb or as their representative; because of sb; for sb 代表(或代替)某人;因为某人,为了某人 On behalf of the department I would like to thank you all. 我谨代表全系感谢大家。 Mr. White cannot be here, so his wife will accept the prize on his behalf. 怀特先生不能来,因此由他夫人代他领奖。 I thank you for all the trouble you have taken on my behalf. 谢谢你为我费了这么多心。 Don‘t worry on my behalf. 别为我担心。 8. This was our family‘s cue to eat some and proclaim it the best she had ever made. Meaning: This was a signal for our family to eat some and say it was the best my mother had ever made. proclaim: publicly and officially tell people about sth important; declare 宣布,宣告,声明 The president proclaimed a state of emergency. 总统宣布了紧急状态。 The charter proclaimed that all states would have their own government. 宪章规定,所有各州皆允建立各自的政府。 He proclaimed himself emperor. 他自封为皇帝。 He proclaims himself a believer in that theory. 他声称自己相信那种理论。 9. hit it off: enjoy good relations; get along very well 相处得很好 Tom and I hit it off with each other. 我和汤姆相处得很好。 3. Assignment Do the exercises about vocabulary and phrases Ss learnt in unit 4. T checks on Ss‘ exercises on pages 74—76. T checks on Ss‘ home reading (Unit 3 in Extensive Reading). T asks Ss to do the exercises of Unit 3 in Comprehensive Exercises. T asks Ss to read The Joy Luck Club or other works in the Asian American literature. T asks Ss to prepare the next unit.

Reading skills: Reading for the key idea in a sentence. 4) To stimulate Ss to discuss what is of great value in love. 5) To read widely outside class.
