Stop Spoiling Your Children

Teaching Procedures: 1. Reading Skills
Understanding Figurative Language Figurative language can be confusing if it is understood literally. The ability to recognize and interpret or explain figurative language may help us fully understand a writer‘s point. There are many different ways of using figurative language: similes; metaphors; personification. Purpose: Introduce the reading skill to the Ss and improve their reading abilities. Method: Use multimedia instruction and talk in groups; Use task-based language teaching method, reading approach, communicative approach and total physical response method. T explains the reading skill (reading for the key idea in a sentence). Ss practise the skill by doing the exercise on page 122 in pairs.

2. Passage Reading (Experiences in Exile)
2.1 Lead-in and preparation for reading Show Ss some pictures about the common phenomena exist in China that the parents‘ spoil their children talk about the following questions:(pair work, group-discussion)

(1) What are your views on One-child Family? (2) What‘s your opinion on Generation Gap? Purpose: Arouse the students‘ interest of study. Bring in new subject: Stop Spoiling Your

Para.11. 15.could the parents change entirely at once? 16.will the children listen to them at once? 17.what will be the result if the parents practice doing so? 2.3 Language points 1)…Parents spoil their children out of a sense of guilt. (Para. 4) Meaning: …parents do harm to the character, nature, or attitude of their children by giving them too much because they feel they have done something wrong to their children (an thus they want to make up for it by doing so). 2)…they pined for but didn‘t get. (Para. 5) pine for: want very much, esp. when it is unlikely that one will be able to have. 3)…will be made fun of…(Para. 5) make fun of: laugh at sb. or sth., or cause others to laugh at them, usu. In an unkind way. 4)…when parents are unable to stand up to their children‘s unreasonable demands.
