II. Section B Are You a Workaholic? Teaching Procedures:
1. Reading Skills
Finding Out Word Meanings Figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word from the clues provided by the context. The context clues include: 1) Some sentences give the definition for a difficult word with the help of punctuation such as commas, dashes or parentheses. 2) Context sometimes gives examples to illustrate a difficult word rather than define it. We can use the examples to figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. 3 ) Synonyms (同义词) are words or phrases that are similar in meaning. A synonym is one type of context clue that helps you to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words. 4) Antonyms (反义词) are words or phrases that have opposite meanings to other words or

phrases. Antonym clues can help you understand new words. 5) Sentences before or after a sentence that has a difficult word sometimes explain the meaning of the word. 6) Sometimes we can use our own experiences, or our knowledge about a certain subject, to find out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. 7) Word part clues. We can often figure out an unfamiliar word because we know the prefix or suffix attached to the root word, or the two words that make up a compound word. Purpose: Introduce the reading skill to the Ss and improve their reading abilities. Method: Use multimedia instruction and talk in groups; Use task-based language teaching method, reading approach, communicative approach and total physical response method. T explains the reading skill (Finding Out Word Meanings). Ss practise the skill by doing the exercise on page 190 in pairs.

2. Passage Reading (Are You a Workaholic?)
2.1 Lead-in and preparation for reading Show Ss some pictures about workholics and let them talk to each other to check whether the partner is a workholic. Purpose: Arouse the students‘ interest of study. Bring in new subject: Are You a Workaholic?. Method: Use the CAI and talk in groups; Use task-based language teaching method, reading approach, communicative approach, audiolingual method, and total physical response method. 2.2 Comprehension of the Text Read the passage as quickly as they can. and ask the Ss to decide whether the statements shown on the screen are true or false: 1. workaholics are organized people who get a lot of work done and, therefore, they lead a full life. 2. Most company employers support the idea that a balanced employee is a productive employee. 3. Workaholics, from psychology counselors‘ viewpoints, can have both advantages and disadvantages for us. 4. Our parents‘ and grandparents‘ work was more of a physical work, but the stress they felt was no less than we do. 5. Very competitive people tend to becoem workholics, because they equate self-worth with success at their professions. 6. Workaholics never take holidays. 7. Workaholics admit that they spend too much time on work. 8. We should realize that there is a lot more to life than a job. 2.3 Difficult Sentences 1. Workaholics…have unbalanced, one-dimensional lives. (Para. 2) Meaning: Workaholics …lead unhealthy, incomplete lives. There‘s nothing but work in their worlds. 2. …usually defined as compelling behavior despite negative consequences. (Para. 3) Meaning: …usually described as a type of behavior which workaholics are compelled to commit although they know it may bring harmful results. 3. Americans tend to become trapped in a working and spending consumption mode, driven by merchants, that leads them to rack up their expectations. (Para. 3) Meaning: Americans are likely to get stuck in the pattern, created by business people, of working more and spending more, which leads Americans to spend more money and, therefore, they have to work harder to make money. 2.4 Key Words and Expressions

3. Assignment
Do a quiz on the vocabulary on the platform of NHCE Timed reading Do it on the platform of NHCE T checks on Ss‘ exercises on pages 197—198. T asks Ss to prepare the next unit. Purpose: To know if students master the vocabulary and phrases in this class. Method: Use task-based method.
